Top 5 Indian Street Food Dishes to Try in London

Going out for Indian food has traditionally meant stodgy creamy curries, heavy buttery naans and not much choice if you’re looking for a light meal. But with London’s growing obsession with street food, this is no longer the case. There are now many Indian restaurants specialising is light but extra delicious street food, here are my top five:

1. Chicken Lollipops at Chai Ki

Chai Ki has a menu inspired by South India’s roadside drinking dens and specialities in sharing plates This spacious all-day Indian restaurant and toddy shop bar, has a variety of street food choices on the menu. My favourite is the Chicken Lollipops, coated in tamarind, shallots, ginger and coriander with an unexpected spicy kick! Although not a traditional Indian street food dish they are definitely worth a try.

2. Pau Bhaji at Dishoom

Dishoom has become a dining institution, with queues forming outside each of the branches every night. Head there for an early dinner to avoid waiting in line and order the delicious Pau Bhaji, a staple street food dish of Mumbai made up of a bowl of mashed vegetables with hot buttered pau bun.

3. Bhel Puri at Roti Chai

Hidden away behind Oxford Street, Roti Chai has a large ‘street kitchen’ dedicated solely to Indian street food. This casual dining space is perfect for a quick meal and I’d recommend ordering Bhel Puri, a delicious combination of puffed rice, chopped red onions and tangy tamarind sauce!

4. Papdi Chat at Imli Street

Located in the midst of Soho, Imli Street’s all day menu is perfect for grazing on. Their Samosa Chaat created with Punjabi vegetable samosa, yoghurt and chutneys is a delicious way to start a meal here.

5. Roti Wraps from Inito

Inito in Shoreditch aims to transport diners to the busy streets of India and the birthplace of the roti. Their speciality is made to order Roti Wraps which can be ordered with braised lamb, chicken tikka, Gujurati soya and much more. If you’re feeling adventurous you can also create your own!
